The need to give birth to this organization “Social Activities Integration (SAI)’ was felt when Mr.Vinay Vasta who was working in the red-light areas of South Mumbai, found the rigorous need of saving these sex workers & their children from HIV/AIDS .As the plight of these sex workers was very pathetic and there was no medical facilities and services available free of cost then in those days, so innovative strategy of creating awareness was implemented to prevented these sex workers from getting infected by HIV/AIDS. So he took up a small room in Red-light area on a rental basis and began to create Awareness among these sex workers through street plays, poster Exhibition, demonstration to these sex workers on how to use condoms and importance. 20 years ago children of sex workers were trapped in a vicious circle of prostitution but , SAI has not only help ,these children to complete their studies and become self sufficient , but to successfully help them to bring their mothers out of this profession.

Social Activities Integration (SAI) was the first NGO to perform the First street play in India on HIV/AIDS on 1st December 1991 .The work of the organization was recognized by Mumbai District AIDS Control Society (MDACS) supported for Awareness Programs in 1999. The organization work was recognized and was appreciated all over and the word spread across the sea and resulted in visitors and volunteers visiting to our organisation, one among them visited SAI was Mr. John Webster who prepared a documentary and was screened and awarded “Prix Italia Award-2000” winning documentary film named “The Rooms of Shadow and Light on SAI’s dedication for poor sex workers”. The French, Spanish photographer Mr. Nicolas Lainez also conveyed our work to Solidartie Sida-France.

The sex workers from these areas recognized the hard work and determination to help them in their difficult hours of their life and they began to share their personal problems and a bond of Brother and Sister was created. This helped them to get much deserve respect and much needed love and affection as they were looked down by the society. It created a much needed change in life of SW’s, they were called “DIDI” (Elder Sister), and this created a new identity in red-light area. DIDI’S started coming together and helping each other. These“DIDI” were appointed as peer educators have been promoted to the post of Outreach workers, field supervisors and also as nurse, counselors and advocacy officer.
