If we look at the life style of our DIDIs, it is shocking. They carry out prostitution since evening to the wee hour of morning. They do not have proper meals. Some of the new girls are not allowed to step outside the brothrel or even severely physically abused by the brothrel-owner or the husband himself or even the customers. The police also harass them. To forget their anger, their desperation, many become chronic alcoholics; many of them turn to smoking or tobacco chewing or eating Gutka. If someone tells them to quit addiction they say, "it helps me live in a different world. I don’t want to face the reality. If I drink & smoke I will die early. That makes no difference. In fact it is better...."
The main fight of DIDI-VCT project is against this desperation, this helplessness. We give them hope for a better living. The DIDIs look after not only physical but also their mental health. Through different services we provide we have been constantly trying to improve their condition.
